All Planetary Retrogrades in 2027: Complete Calendar and Zodiac Signs

What Planetary Retrograde Means in Astrology

A planetary retrograde occurs when a planet appears to reverse direction across the zodiac as viewed from Earth. This is an optical effect created by the relative motions of Earth and the other planets rather than the planet physically travelling backwards. Astronomers recognise retrograde motion as a predictable part of planetary orbits, while astrologers regard these periods as times when the symbolism of a planet becomes more reflective, inward-looking, or subject to review.

Each planet represents a different area of life. Mercury governs communication and information, Venus relates to relationships and values, Mars symbolises action, Jupiter growth and opportunity, Saturn responsibility and structure, Uranus innovation, Neptune imagination, and Pluto transformation. When one of these planets turns retrograde, astrologers traditionally interpret it as a period for reassessment rather than rapid progress.

The 2027 ephemeris contains retrograde periods involving Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. Venus does not retrograde during 2027. Jupiter begins the year already retrograde from December 2026, while Uranus begins 2027 retrograde in Taurus before turning direct in February. Uranus then begins another retrograde period in September that continues into 2028.

Mercury Retrograde in 2027

Mercury retrogrades three times during 2027. Each cycle crosses back into the previous zodiac sign, making sign changes an important part of all three retrograde periods.

The first Mercury retrograde begins on 10 February 2027 in Pisces. Mercury then moves back into Aquarius on 19 February before turning direct in Aquarius on 3 March 2027.

The second cycle begins on 11 June 2027 in Cancer. Mercury returns to Gemini on 26 June and resumes direct motion in Gemini on 5 July 2027.

The final Mercury retrograde of the year begins on 8 October 2027 in Scorpio. Mercury moves back into Libra on 12 October before turning direct in Libra on 29 October 2027.

Mercury governs communication, learning, transport, commerce and the exchange of information. During retrograde periods it is common to review plans, revisit conversations, correct documents and reassess earlier decisions. Rather than viewing Mercury retrograde as something negative, many astrologers see it as a valuable opportunity to improve existing work before moving forward.

Venus in 2027

Venus does not retrograde during 2027. The planet continues in direct motion throughout the year, moving steadily through the zodiac without a Venus retrograde cycle.

Venus in 2027

Venus does not retrograde during 2027. The planet continues in direct motion throughout the year, moving steadily through the zodiac without a Venus retrograde cycle.

Venus is associated with relationships, personal values, finances, attraction and creativity. Although these areas continue to develop during 2027, there is no extended Venus retrograde period specifically calling for a major reassessment of them.

Mars Retrograde in 2027

Mars turns retrograde on 12 January 2027 in Virgo and resumes direct motion on 3 April 2027 in Leo. During the retrograde, Mars moves back from Virgo into Leo on 3 March.

Mars represents action, motivation, energy, competition and the ability to pursue goals. Its retrograde periods can slow outward momentum and bring attention back to unfinished work, poorly directed effort or ambitions that need to be reconsidered.

Mars Retrograde in Virgo initially places the emphasis on work, organisation, routines and practical efficiency. Its return to Leo shifts the review towards confidence, leadership, creativity and personal pride. The complete sign movement for this cycle is Virgo > Leo.

Jupiter Retrograde in 2027

Jupiter begins 2027 already retrograde in Leo, having stationed retrograde on 14 December 2026. It resumes direct motion in Leo on 14 April 2027.

Astrologically, Jupiter Retrograde is associated with reviewing opportunity, education, travel, confidence and personal growth. During retrograde periods attention often shifts towards reviewing long-term ambitions, refining beliefs and consolidating progress already made before seeking further expansion.

Because this retrograde remains entirely within Leo, the review centres on confidence, creative expression, leadership, recognition and the desire to make a meaningful personal contribution.

Jupiter does not begin another retrograde during the 2027 calendar year. Its next retrograde begins in Virgo on 14 January 2028.

Saturn Retrograde in 2027

Saturn begins retrograde motion on 11 August 2027 in Aries and returns to direct motion in Aries on 26 December 2027.

Saturn represents discipline, commitment, responsibility and long-term planning. Its annual retrograde provides an opportunity to strengthen foundations, review obligations and make practical adjustments before continuing with important long-term goals.

Because the entire retrograde takes place in Aries, questions of independence, initiative, leadership and personal responsibility receive particular attention. This period can reveal where determination needs to be supported by greater patience, structure and realistic planning.

Uranus Retrograde in 2027

Uranus begins 2027 already retrograde, continuing the cycle that started in Gemini on 11 September 2026. Uranus moved back into Taurus on 28 December 2026 and turns direct in Taurus on 9 February 2027. It later re-enters Gemini on 23 March.

A new Uranus Retrograde begins on 16 September 2027 in Gemini and continues until Uranus turns direct in Gemini on 14 February 2028.

Uranus symbolises innovation, technology, independence and unexpected change. Because it spends many years in each zodiac sign, its retrograde tends to influence broad social and cultural trends as well as the way individuals respond to changing ideas and circumstances.

The opening retrograde cycle carries the sign movement Gemini > Taurus > Gemini. The later 2027 cycle remains within Gemini, placing continuing emphasis on communication, information, learning, technology and new ways of exchanging ideas.

Neptune Retrograde in 2027

Neptune turns retrograde on 11 July 2027 in Aries and returns to direct motion in Aries on 17 December 2027.

Neptune is associated with imagination, spirituality, ideals and inspiration. During retrograde periods there is often greater emphasis on separating dreams from reality, questioning assumptions and developing a clearer understanding of long-term aspirations.

With Neptune retrograde in Aries, attention turns towards personal direction, motivation and the difference between genuine inspiration and impulsive enthusiasm. Ideas may need to be examined carefully before they can become practical goals.

Pluto Retrograde in 2027

Pluto begins retrograde motion on 11 May 2027 in Aquarius and resumes direct motion in Aquarius on 19 October 2027.

Pluto moves more slowly than any other major planet and is associated with transformation, power, renewal and profound change. Its retrograde period is commonly linked with gradual shifts beneath the surface that eventually lead to lasting developments.

Pluto remains in Aquarius throughout this retrograde. Its themes therefore continue to concern groups, communities, technology, collective power and the changing systems through which people organise and influence society.

Understanding Retrograde Cycles

Retrogrades are a natural and recurring part of every astrological year. They do not stop progress, but they often encourage patience, reflection and careful planning. Each retrograde highlights different themes according to the symbolism of the planet involved, while the slower outer planets provide the broader background against which the faster-moving planets operate.

The beginning of 2027 is particularly notable because Mars, Jupiter and Uranus are all retrograde during January. Mercury joins them in February before Uranus turns direct. Later in the year, Pluto, Neptune, Saturn and Uranus create another extended period of overlapping outer-planet retrogrades.

Looking at the complete retrograde calendar allows you to see when several planets are simultaneously moving through reflective phases. These periods often coincide with times of reassessment, revision and gradual change rather than immediate action, making the yearly ephemeris a valuable reference for understanding the larger astrological picture.
