Astrocartography Lines
The lines on an astrocartography map show where The Sun, The Moon and the planets occupied important angular positions around the Earth at the moment of birth. Each planetary line connects geographical locations where a planet was rising, setting, at the Midheaven or at the Imum Coeli. These four positions are normally identified as AC, DC, MC and IC.
This means that the lines do not simply show where a planet was located in the sky. They show where that planet had a particular relationship with the horizon and the angles of the birth chart. Each line combines the characteristics of a planet with the meaning of one of the four main angles. Understanding both parts of this combination is the key to understanding what an astrocartography line means.
A planet can have several lines on the same map. The Sun, for example, can have a Sun AC line, Sun DC line, Sun MC line and Sun IC line. All four contain the astrological characteristics of The Sun, but they emphasise different areas of life. The same principle applies to The Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.
AC lines are Ascendant lines. They show locations where a particular planet was rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. The Ascendant is strongly connected with the self, personality and the way someone approaches the world, so AC lines tend to place the characteristics of the planet more directly onto the individual. A Sun AC line can place greater emphasis on confidence, vitality and self expression. A Mars AC line may bring energy, ambition and self assertion more strongly into the way someone approaches life.
DC lines are Descendant lines. They show where a planet was setting on the western horizon. The Descendant sits directly opposite the Ascendant and has a much stronger connection with relationships, partnerships and other people. The characteristics of the planet can therefore become more noticeable through the people someone meets and the relationships they form. Venus on the DC has obvious connections with affection, harmony and relationships, while Saturn on the DC can place greater emphasis on responsibility, boundaries and commitment.
The difference between an AC and DC line is important. Both may involve exactly the same planet, but the direction of the interpretation changes. The AC places more attention on the self, while the DC places more attention on other people and relationships.
MC lines are Midheaven lines. These show locations where the planet was at the upper part of the chart. The Midheaven has strong connections with career, ambition, recognition and someone's place in the outside world. Planetary MC lines are therefore particularly important when astrocartography is being used to examine work, career or public life.
A Jupiter MC line, for example, combines career and public life with Jupiter's associations with growth, prosperity, good fortune, freedom and exploration. A Mars MC line can place more emphasis on ambition, energy and competition. Saturn MC may involve greater responsibility, discipline and hard work. None of these lines guarantees a particular result. They describe the planetary subjects that astrologers would consider more strongly emphasised in that location.
IC lines are Imum Coeli lines. The IC sits opposite the Midheaven and represents the lower part of the chart. Its meaning is more closely connected with home, family, security and private life. This makes IC lines particularly interesting when considering where to live or establish a home. A Moon IC line combines these subjects with The Moon's associations with emotions, memories, nurturing, home and security. Venus IC can bring the Venus subjects of affection, harmony and pleasure into the private side of life.
The difference between the MC and IC is therefore similar to the relationship between the AC and DC. The MC looks outward towards career and public life, while the IC turns inward towards home and private life. Together, the four angles provide the framework through which the planetary lines can be interpreted.
The planet itself provides the second part of the meaning.
Sun lines are connected with the inner self, ego, power, self expression, creativity and vitality. A Sun line can place greater attention on personal direction and the desire to express who we are. The angle determines whether this is experienced more strongly through the self, relationships, public life or private life.
Moon lines are associated with emotions, memories, moods, nurturing, home and security. Locations close to Moon lines can therefore have a particularly personal or emotional character. A Moon DC line can bring this emotional emphasis into relationships, while a Moon IC line directs it more strongly towards home and family.
Mercury lines bring attention to intellect, thoughts and communication. They can be important for learning, writing, conversation, ideas and meeting new people. Mercury on the MC may place communication more strongly into career and public life, while Mercury on the DC can emphasise communication within relationships and dealings with others.
Venus lines are associated with affection, harmony, balance, romantic relationships and pleasure. Venus also has connections with art, music, fashion and social life. This can make Venus lines attractive when looking at relationships, creativity or enjoyment, but the angle still matters. Venus DC and Venus MC should not be interpreted as though they mean the same thing.
Mars lines bring confidence, self assertion, energy, strength, ambition and impulsiveness. They can encourage action and provide greater motivation, but impatience or conflict can also become more noticeable. A Mars MC line may place this energy into ambition and career, while Mars DC can bring it more directly into relationships and interactions with other people.
Jupiter lines are associated with growth, prosperity, good fortune, travelling, freedom and exploration. They can place greater emphasis on opportunities, gaining knowledge and expanding horizons. Jupiter should not automatically be interpreted as a guarantee of success, however. Its angle and its position within the original birth chart remain important.
Saturn lines are associated with restriction, boundaries, hard work, responsibility, practicality and discipline. Saturn locations can bring greater responsibilities or require patience and sustained effort. This does not automatically make a Saturn line an undesirable place. Someone working towards a serious long-term ambition may experience its emphasis very differently from someone looking for an easy and carefree period of life.
The outer planets can also form important lines. Uranus lines are associated with originality, individuality, freedom and major changes. Neptune lines have connections with idealism, compassion, imagination, illusion and confusion. Pluto lines can bring subjects involving self empowerment, endings and important periods of change. Their meaning still depends on whether the planet is connected with the AC, DC, MC or IC.
An astrocartography map can therefore contain many different combinations. A Venus DC line, Mars MC line and Moon IC line are not simply three coloured lines on a map. Each represents a different combination of planet, angle and geographical location.
Several lines can also pass through or close to the same part of the world. When this happens, the location cannot always be understood by considering one planet in isolation. A place influenced by both Jupiter and Saturn, for example, combines very different planetary subjects. The angles involved also need to be considered before deciding how those influences fit together.
Distance from a line matters as well. A city does not necessarily need to sit directly underneath a planetary line before astrologers consider it relevant. Locations surrounding the line can also be included, although different astrologers use different distances when judging the surrounding area of influence. The lines are better understood as the centre of a geographical influence rather than an exact boundary where an influence suddenly begins or ends.
It is also important not to divide planetary lines into a simple list of good and bad locations. Venus and Jupiter may initially appear more attractive than Mars or Saturn, but every planet represents different characteristics. A Mars line may be useful where energy, confidence and ambition are important. Saturn can emphasise discipline and responsibility. Venus may bring greater attention to pleasure and relationships, while Jupiter can encourage expansion and exploration.
The original birth chart remains the starting point for interpreting all of these lines. A planet keeps its original Zodiac sign, aspects and connections with the rest of the birth chart. Astrocartography shows where that planet becomes angular around the Earth. It does not replace the planet's original position or meaning within the chart.
In simple terms, the lines in astrocartography show where each planet was rising, setting, at the Midheaven or at the IC at the moment of birth. The planet tells us which astrological characteristics are being emphasised, the AC, DC, MC or IC tells us where those characteristics may be expressed, and the line shows the geographical locations connected with that combination.
