What Are the Lunar Nodes in Astrology?

The Lunar Nodes are two important points used in astrology, but unlike The Sun, The Moon and the planets they are not physical objects in the sky. They are the two points where the path of The Moon crosses the apparent path of The Sun around the Earth. These points are known as the North Node and the South Node.

The Moon does not travel around the Earth on exactly the same plane as the Earth's orbit around The Sun. Its orbit is tilted slightly. This means that during each orbit The Moon crosses the path of The Sun twice. One crossing creates the North Node and the other creates the South Node.

The North Node is also known as the ascending node because this is where The Moon crosses from south to north. The South Node is the descending node, where The Moon crosses in the opposite direction. The two Lunar Nodes are always directly opposite one another in the zodiac.

Although there is nothing physically located at either point, the Lunar Nodes have been used in astrology for centuries. They are particularly important because of their connection with eclipses. A Solar or Lunar Eclipse can only occur when a New Moon or Full Moon takes place sufficiently close to the Lunar Nodes.

The North Node in Astrology

The North Node is generally associated with growth, development and the direction in which we are moving. In a birth chart it can show qualities that need to be developed and experiences that can take us beyond what already feels familiar.

This does not necessarily make the North Node an easy influence. Moving towards something unfamiliar can require effort. The sign and house occupied by the North Node can point towards an area where a person needs to gain greater experience rather than relying entirely on what they already know.

The North Node can therefore represent something of a challenge. There can be a strong attraction towards what it represents while at the same time there can be uncertainty about how to deal with it. Experience gradually makes this area of life easier to understand.

The South Node in Astrology

The South Node sits directly opposite the North Node and is associated with the past, established habits and qualities that are already familiar. In a birth chart it can represent abilities that come naturally and situations that a person finds relatively easy to understand.

There is nothing necessarily negative about the South Node. Experience and familiar abilities can be extremely useful. Problems can arise when someone becomes too dependent on them and refuses to move beyond what they already know.

It can be tempting to remain with the South Node because it feels comfortable. The North Node asks for development while the South Node represents what has already been learned. Astrology therefore looks at the two points together rather than treating either one in isolation.

The North Node and South Node Always Work Together

The Lunar Nodes always form an axis across the birth chart. If the North Node is in Aries, the South Node will be in Libra. If the North Node is in Taurus, the South Node will be in Scorpio. This continues through all six pairs of opposite zodiac signs.

This opposition is important because the Lunar Nodes are about balance as much as movement. The purpose is not simply to abandon everything represented by the South Node and concentrate entirely on the North Node. Qualities from the South Node can provide experience that helps us develop the qualities represented by the North Node.

Someone with the North Node in Aries and South Node in Libra, for example, can already understand cooperation and the importance of considering other people. Their North Node points towards developing greater independence and becoming more confident about making their own decisions. The useful qualities of Libra do not have to disappear for Aries qualities to become stronger.

The signs occupied by the Lunar Nodes therefore describe two different but connected sides of the same subject. One is familiar while the other requires greater development.

Why Are the Lunar Nodes Connected With Eclipses?

The connection between the Lunar Nodes and eclipses comes directly from the movement of The Moon. Most New Moons and Full Moons do not produce eclipses because The Moon passes slightly above or below the necessary alignment.

When a New Moon takes place close enough to one of the Lunar Nodes, The Moon can pass between the Earth and The Sun and create a Solar Eclipse. When a Full Moon occurs close enough to a node, the Earth can move between The Sun and The Moon and create a Lunar Eclipse.

This is why the Lunar Nodes are sometimes called the Nodes of the Moon or eclipse points. Their position shows where the orbit of The Moon crosses the ecliptic and therefore where the necessary alignment for an eclipse becomes possible.

Astrologically this has given the Lunar Nodes a strong connection with periods of change. Eclipses can bring attention towards matters that have been developing for some time. Because eclipses occur close to the nodes, astrologers often examine the sign and position of the relevant node when interpreting them.

The Lunar Nodes Move Through the Zodiac

The Lunar Nodes gradually move through all twelve signs of the zodiac. Their usual direction is backwards through the signs, which is why their movement is often described as retrograde.

It takes approximately 18.6 years for the Lunar Nodes to complete a full cycle of the zodiac. They therefore remain within the same pair of opposite signs for roughly a year and a half before moving into the previous pair.

Because the nodes move slowly, everyone born during the same period can have the Lunar Nodes in the same two zodiac signs. Their exact position by degree and house will depend upon the individual birth chart.

When the Lunar Nodes eventually return to approximately the positions they occupied at birth, this is known as a Nodal Return. This happens roughly every 18 to 19 years and brings the North and South Nodes back to an important position in the natal chart.

The Lunar Nodes in a Birth Chart

To understand the Lunar Nodes properly in a birth chart, both their signs and houses need to be considered. The zodiac signs describe the qualities associated with the nodes while the houses show the areas of life where those qualities are most likely to become important.

The South Node can show where someone naturally falls back on familiar behaviour. This can be useful when experience is needed, but less useful when familiarity becomes an excuse for avoiding change.

The North Node points in the opposite direction. Its position can show where greater effort, independence or experience needs to be developed. It can initially feel less comfortable precisely because it does not represent the easiest route.

This does not mean that the Lunar Nodes control a person's destiny. They are part of a much larger birth chart containing The Sun, The Moon, the planets, houses and aspects. Their value comes from showing a particular relationship between what is already familiar and what still needs to be developed.

True Node and Mean Node

Anyone looking at different astrology charts can occasionally notice slightly different positions given for the Lunar Nodes. This is because astrologers can calculate them using either the True Node or the Mean Node.

The actual motion of the Lunar Nodes is not perfectly smooth. The True Node calculation follows these small variations and can occasionally show the node moving direct for a short period. The Mean Node uses an averaged position and moves steadily backwards through the zodiac.

Both methods are used by astrologers. Usually the difference between them is relatively small, although it can become important if a node is very close to changing signs or if its exact degree is being used to calculate an aspect.

What Do the Lunar Nodes Mean in Astrology?

The Lunar Nodes describe a relationship between the familiar and the unfamiliar. The South Node represents experience, established habits and qualities that can already be used with confidence. The North Node represents development and the need to move beyond those familiar patterns.

Neither node should be considered completely good or completely bad. Too much dependence on the South Node can keep someone stuck in old patterns, while concentrating on the North Node without using existing experience can make progress unnecessarily difficult.

The two points work together. The South Node provides something to build upon and the North Node shows where further development can take place.

The Lunar Nodes are unusual because they are not planets and cannot be seen in the night sky. They are mathematical points created by the orbit of The Moon, yet they play an important role in both birth chart astrology and the eclipse cycle.

Understanding the North Node and South Node gives another way of looking at direction and development within astrology. One shows what is already familiar while the other points towards what still needs to be explored. Together they form an axis that can show where we are comfortable, where we are being challenged and where there is still room to grow.
