Tips for Navigating Mercury Retrogrades

Mercury Retrogrades

Mercury retrograde has developed a reputation for being one of the most difficult periods in astrology. Communication can become confused, plans can change and something that appeared to be settled may suddenly need another look. Yet Mercury retrograde does not mean that everything will go wrong. It is better understood as a period when greater care can be useful, particularly when dealing with communication, information, decisions and arrangements.

Mercury represents our intellect, thoughts and communication, together with reasoning and adaptability. It is also traditionally associated with commerce and negotiation. When Mercury appears to move backwards through the Zodiac, these areas of life can require more attention than usual. The important thing is not to stop everything until Mercury turns direct, but to pay closer attention to what you are doing.

Check Before You Send

Communication is one of the most obvious areas associated with Mercury. During a retrograde period, misunderstandings can become more noticeable when people rush conversations or make assumptions about what somebody else means. Take another look before sending an important message, read an email again before pressing send and ask for more information when instructions are unclear.

This does not mean that every conversation will become difficult. Clear and concise communication can prevent many unnecessary problems, particularly when several people are involved. Mercury retrograde can also be useful for returning to conversations that were never properly finished. Something left unsaid may become important again, giving both sides another opportunity to explain their thoughts and clear up an earlier misunderstanding.

Give Yourself More Time

Plans do not always develop exactly as expected, whether Mercury is retrograde or not. During Mercury retrograde it can be sensible to leave a little more room for changes, particularly when something important depends on several people, a journey or information arriving at a particular time. Having some flexibility makes it much easier to adapt if plans need to change.

Do not confuse being prepared with expecting something to go wrong. Mercury is associated with adaptability as well as reasoning. When circumstances change, adapting to the new situation can be considerably more useful than becoming frustrated because the original plan no longer works. A little extra time can make the difference between a minor inconvenience and a much larger problem.

Look at the Details

Mercury has a strong connection with analysis and critical ability through Virgo. This makes a retrograde period a useful time to go back over details that may previously have been missed. Read important information carefully, check dates, times and arrangements and look again at work that was completed quickly. Small mistakes can often be corrected before they become larger problems.

This is particularly useful when returning to an unfinished task. Mercury retrograde can provide an opportunity to review, reconsider and improve something that already exists rather than continually rushing towards something new. Work that appeared finished may benefit from another look, while an old problem can sometimes be easier to solve when approached with more information and experience.

Think Before Making a Decision

A Mercury retrograde does not mean that nobody should make an important decision. Life continues and some decisions cannot simply be postponed. It does mean that taking a little more time can be worthwhile, particularly when the decision depends upon information that may still be incomplete.

Mercury represents reasoning, and different Zodiac signs can change the way that reasoning is expressed. Mercury in Aries can be enthusiastic and impatient, while Mercury in Taurus is more methodical. Mercury in Libra can see both sides of a situation but may spend too long weighing up the pros and cons. Whatever sign Mercury is moving through, avoid making a rushed decision simply because you feel pressured to provide an immediate answer. Consider what you know, find out what you do not know and then make the best decision you can with the information available.

Be Careful With Agreements

Mercury has long been associated with commerce and negotiation, making agreements another area where extra attention can be useful during a retrograde period. This does not mean contracts signed during Mercury retrograde are destined to fail. Turning a useful astrological influence into an absolute rule can create unnecessary worry and prevent people from dealing with matters that genuinely need their attention.

Instead, make sure you understand what you are agreeing to. Read the details, ask questions if something is unclear and do not assume that another person has understood an arrangement in exactly the same way that you have. If circumstances later change, there may be a need to revisit part of the agreement. Being clear from the beginning can make that considerably easier.

Expect Old Subjects to Return

One of the most useful ways of approaching Mercury retrograde is to consider what may need another look. An unfinished conversation can return, an old idea may suddenly seem useful again or a project put aside months ago can become interesting. Information that did not make sense before may become easier to understand when viewed from a different direction.

Looking backwards is not always the same as going backwards. The past contains experience, and returning to something with more knowledge can produce a very different result from the first attempt. There is no need to search deliberately for old problems, but if something returns naturally it may be worth asking why it still needs your attention and whether there is now a better way of dealing with it.

Do Not Believe Every Rumour

Mercury is the Messenger of The Gods, but the planet also has a more complicated side. The Caduceus can represent commerce and negotiation, but also deception and theft, while Mercury is also described as a god of crossroads and the prince of thieves. Information should therefore be treated with some care, particularly when its original source is unclear.

A story repeated by several people is not automatically true. Something seen online may be missing important details, while somebody may simply have misunderstood what they were originally told. Check the source before passing information on. Mercury retrograde is a particularly appropriate time to remember the difference between communication and accurate communication.

Allow Other People to Correct Themselves

Misunderstandings involve more than one person. Someone may use the wrong words, forget an important detail or change their mind after receiving new information. Giving people the opportunity to explain can prevent a simple mistake from developing into a much larger disagreement.

Mercury is connected with conversation and the exchange of ideas. Communication becomes considerably more difficult when everyone is determined to defend their first interpretation of what was said. Sometimes asking whether you have understood somebody correctly is enough to clear up the problem. Clarification is often more useful than assumption.

Revisit an Old Idea

Not every part of Mercury retrograde needs to be about avoiding mistakes. An old idea that was abandoned because the timing was wrong may deserve another chance. Previous work can be improved, research can be continued and a problem that once appeared impossible may look very different after several months or years.

Mercury is connected with intellect and ideas, so a retrograde period can turn some of that attention towards thoughts that already exist. This can be particularly productive when there is unfinished business. Rather than automatically starting another project, consider whether something already under way deserves to be completed first. Returning to an old idea does not mean repeating exactly what you did before.

Avoid Blaming Everything on Mercury

A missed appointment is not automatically caused by Mercury retrograde. Neither is a broken phone, an argument or every delayed journey. Mercury retrograde provides an astrological background for interpretation, but it does not remove personal responsibility or mean that ordinary problems suddenly have a single planetary cause.

If a mistake has been made, correct it. If somebody has been misunderstood, talk to them. If plans change, adapt to the new situation. Mercury retrograde should encourage greater awareness, not become an excuse for avoiding responsibility. This is one of the most useful ways of keeping the retrograde period in perspective.

Remember That Mercury Will Turn Direct

Every Mercury retrograde eventually ends. Subjects that became confused can become clearer, conversations continue, decisions are made and plans begin moving forwards again. Something learned during the retrograde period can then become useful when Mercury returns to direct motion.

There is therefore little reason to fear Mercury retrograde. Pay attention to communication, check important details and give yourself enough time to think. Remain adaptable when plans change and be prepared to reconsider something when new information becomes available. Use Mercury retrograde to think rather than panic.

Mercury represents intellect, thoughts, communication, reasoning and adaptability. Those qualities do not disappear when the planet is retrograde. They are exactly the qualities that can help you navigate it.
