Retrogrades: Why September 2026 Feels Like Moving Forward While Looking Back

September 2026 presents an interesting contrast in the movement of the planets. Mercury, Venus, Mars and Jupiter are all moving direct, while Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are retrograde. The result is a month where everyday life can appear to be moving forwards while some of the slower and more important changes taking place in the background still need time and consideration.

This does not mean September is divided neatly between progress and delay. The direct planets encourage movement, decisions and action, while the retrograde planets bring attention back towards longer-term responsibilities, changes, ideals and deeper questions.

It can feel like moving forward while still looking back.

The Planets Moving Forward

Mercury is direct in September, allowing the planet of intellect, thoughts and communication to move forwards without a Mercury retrograde period interrupting the month. Conversations can develop, decisions can be made and new ideas can be explored.

Mercury moves from Virgo into Libra during September. This changes the character of communication from the careful and analytical nature of Virgo towards the more diplomatic qualities of Libra. Mercury in Libra likes to see both sides of a situation and strives to restore balance. This can be useful during a month when some of the slower planets are encouraging much deeper reconsideration.

Venus is also direct, moving from Libra into Scorpio during the month. Venus represents affection, harmony, balance, romantic relationships, partnerships and pleasure. There is forward movement in these areas, but the move into Scorpio brings greater intensity. Relationships can continue to develop even while people are reconsidering some of the larger questions surrounding what they really want.

Mars is direct throughout September and moves from Cancer into Leo. Mars represents confidence, self assertion, energy, strength, ambition and physical activity. Its direct movement provides an important source of momentum.

Mars in Cancer can sometimes allow insecurity or emotions to prevent movement forwards. Its move into Leo changes this considerably. Mars in Leo is confident, highly motivated and passionate about its goals. By the closing days of September there can be a much stronger desire to act rather than simply think about what needs to be done.

Jupiter is also direct in Leo. Jupiter is associated with growth, prosperity, good fortune, freedom and exploration. In Leo its optimistic qualities can become particularly noticeable. Jupiter encourages people to look for opportunities and think about what might be possible rather than concentrating only on limitations.

Together these direct planets create considerable forward movement. Ideas can become decisions. Decisions can become actions. Relationships can develop and new opportunities can be explored.

But this is only one side of September.

The Slower Planets Are Looking Back

Saturn, Neptune and Pluto begin September retrograde, while Uranus turns retrograde in Gemini during the month. By the middle of September, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are all moving retrograde at the same time.

These planets move much more slowly through the Zodiac than Mercury, Venus and Mars. Their influence is therefore connected with much longer periods of change. When several of them are retrograde together, the effect is not necessarily an obvious halt to everyday life.

Instead, larger questions can remain unresolved while ordinary life continues moving forwards.

Saturn is the planet of restriction, boundaries, limitations, hard work, responsibility, practicality and reality. Saturn retrograde in Aries can bring attention back towards responsibilities and limitations that have already been encountered. Plans can still move forwards, but some of the structures supporting those plans may need further consideration.

There can be a strange contradiction here. Mars may be encouraging action while Saturn asks whether enough thought has been given to the consequences.

This is one of the central themes of September.

Uranus Turns Retrograde in Gemini

Uranus adds another layer when it turns retrograde in Gemini. Uranus is associated with originality, inventions, radical ideas, individuality, freedom and major changes. Gemini brings communication, ideas, knowledge and curiosity into this picture.

Uranus retrograde does not mean that change suddenly stops. It can instead change the direction in which attention is focused. Ideas that appeared new or exciting may need another look. Changes already under way may need to be reconsidered before their longer-term consequences become clear.

This can be particularly noticeable because Mercury remains direct.

Communication can move forwards while the ideas behind it continue changing. New information can arrive, discussions can develop and decisions can be made, but there can still be a need to reconsider some of the larger assumptions behind them.

Uranus retrograde therefore fits particularly well with September's wider pattern. There is movement, but not everything moving forwards is necessarily settled.

Neptune Retrograde in Aries

Neptune is associated with idealism and compassion, but also illusion, deception and confusion. Retrograde in Aries, Neptune continues a much longer process involving ideals, imagination and the difference between what we want to believe and what is actually possible.

Aries wants movement and is not afraid of breaking free from old traditions. Neptune can be highly imaginative and idealistic. Together they can produce inspiring ideas, but there is also the possibility of becoming over optimistic.

The retrograde period gives more time to consider those ideas.

This becomes particularly relevant during a month when Mars and Jupiter can encourage confidence and action. Optimism is useful, but September also contains reminders to make sure enthusiasm has some connection with reality.

Saturn and Neptune Ask Different Questions

Saturn and Neptune are both retrograde in Aries, but they represent very different influences.

Saturn is concerned with boundaries, responsibility, discipline and reality. Neptune is connected with idealism, imagination and things that may not always be as clear as they first appear.

Saturn asks what is practical. Neptune asks what is possible.

With both retrograde, old plans, ambitions and expectations can come under renewed examination. Something that once seemed realistic may now appear too restrictive. Something that once seemed impossible may deserve another look.

This does not have to prevent progress. It can help determine which ideas are worth taking forwards.

Pluto Retrograde in Aquarius

Pluto retrograde in Aquarius adds an even deeper background influence. Pluto's effects are often indirect, particularly when combined with the influences of other planets. It can signal the beginning of an end and the need to close one chapter before another can properly begin.

Aquarius has a strong connection with independence, originality, freedom and new ideas. Pluto moving slowly through this sign represents changes that develop over a much longer period than a single month.

During its retrograde period, some of those changes can require further thought.

There may be situations where something has already begun changing but has not yet reached its final form. September does not necessarily provide all of the answers. Pluto retrograde can keep deeper changes working beneath the surface while the faster planets continue with the more immediate business of life.

Moving Forward Does Not Mean Everything Is Settled

This is what makes September 2026 particularly interesting.

Mercury can make decisions. Venus can develop relationships and partnerships. Mars can take action. Jupiter can look towards growth and new opportunities.

At the same time Saturn is reconsidering responsibilities and limitations. Uranus is reconsidering change. Neptune is questioning ideals and expectations. Pluto continues much deeper processes of change and self empowerment.

The month can therefore contain genuine progress without complete certainty about where that progress will eventually lead.

Someone can make an important decision while still reconsidering their longer-term plans. A relationship can move forwards while expectations about its future change. New opportunities can appear at work while questions about career and ambition remain unresolved.

These are not necessarily contradictions. Different planets operate over very different periods of time.

Why So Many Retrogrades Are Not Unusual

Four planets being retrograde at the same time can sound dramatic, but the slower planets spend substantial periods of every year in apparent retrograde motion. Their retrograde periods commonly overlap.

Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto being retrograde together should therefore not be interpreted as a rare event where everything suddenly begins moving backwards.

The more interesting feature of September is the contrast.

The planets most closely connected with communication, relationships and action are moving direct. The much slower planets connected with responsibility, major change, ideals and deeper transformation are retrograde.

This produces a useful description of the month: immediate life moves forwards while longer-term matters remain under review.

September's Forward and Backward Motion

September 2026 is not a month where retrogrades prevent progress. There is considerable direct planetary movement encouraging communication, relationships, action and growth.

The retrogrades operate behind this movement.

Saturn asks whether plans are practical and responsibilities have been dealt with. Uranus keeps changes and new ideas under consideration. Neptune encourages another look at ideals and expectations. Pluto continues the deeper process of deciding what needs to change and what may eventually need to be left behind.

Meanwhile Mercury, Venus, Mars and Jupiter keep moving forwards.

September can therefore feel like standing between two directions at once. Everyday life continues. Decisions are made, relationships develop and plans move ahead. Yet some of the bigger questions remain open.

Moving forwards does not always require forgetting what is behind us. Sometimes looking back provides the information needed to decide where to go next.
