What Is MBTI?

The Myers Briggs Type Indicator, or MBTI, is a personality framework that helps people understand how they gather information, make decisions, and move through the world. It sorts personality into sixteen different types, each represented by a four letter code. These letters describe preferences, not abilities, and they help explain why people communicate, plan, and react in different ways. Many people use MBTI as a simple starting point for self reflection and personal growth.

The system is built around four preference pairs. Extraversion and Introversion describe where you focus your energy. Sensing and Intuition describe how you notice information. Thinking and Feeling describe how you make decisions. Judging and Perceiving describe how you approach structure and lifestyle. When combined, these four choices create a type pattern that highlights your natural strengths and common stress responses.

MBTI is not a measure of intelligence or mental health. It is a tool for thinking about patterns in behaviour. People often use it to improve teamwork, understand communication habits, or explore why they prefer certain environments. It can also help explain why some tasks feel energising while others feel draining. The goal is not to fit into a box, but to understand the preferences you lean toward and how they shape your daily choices.

Many people explore MBTI alongside other personality systems because it gives them clear language for describing how they work. It can support conversations about motivation, planning, and relationships. While it is not a scientific model in the strict sense, it has remained popular because it feels practical and accessible. At its core, MBTI helps you recognise patterns, understand your strengths, and make sense of how you respond to the world around you.
