Do Empty Houses Matter in Astrology?

An empty house in astrology is a house in a birth chart that contains no planets. With twelve houses but only a limited number of planets, empty houses are completely normal. Most birth charts will contain several of them.

An empty house does not mean that the area of life represented by that house is missing, unimportant or destined to remain inactive.

This is one of the most important things to understand when first reading a birth chart. Someone with an empty Seventh House can still have important relationships and marry. An empty Tenth House does not prevent someone from having a successful career. An empty Fifth House does not mean there will be no romance, creativity or children.

Every house remains part of the birth chart whether it contains a planet or not.

The twelve houses represent different areas of life. The First House is connected with the self and the way we approach the world. The Second House includes money, possessions and personal values. The Third House covers communication, learning and the familiar environment, while the Fourth House is associated with home, family and security.

The Fifth House brings creativity, pleasure, romance and children. The Sixth House is concerned with work, daily routines, health and practical responsibilities. These houses continue around the chart through relationships, shared resources, travel and knowledge, career, friendships and the more private areas of life.

A planet occupying one of these houses can make its subjects particularly noticeable. An empty house simply means there is no natal planet positioned there. We then need to look elsewhere in the chart to understand how that house operates.

The first place to look is the Zodiac sign at the beginning of the house, usually called the house cusp. The qualities of this sign help describe the way someone approaches the matters represented by that house.

For example, two people might both have an empty Sixth House but experience its subjects quite differently. Someone with Aries on the Sixth House cusp may approach work and daily responsibilities quickly and directly. Someone with Capricorn there may take a more disciplined, serious and practical approach. Neither person needs to have a planet in the Sixth House for these differences to be present.

The next step is particularly important.

Find the planet that rules the Zodiac sign on the house cusp. This planet becomes the ruler of that house, and its position elsewhere in the birth chart can provide considerably more information.

If Taurus is on the cusp of an empty Second House, Venus becomes the ruler of that house. Venus may be somewhere else entirely in the chart, but its sign, house position and aspects can help describe how Second House matters involving money, possessions and personal values operate.

This creates connections between different parts of a birth chart.

Suppose the ruler of an empty Second House is positioned in the Tenth House. Matters involving money and possessions can then become closely connected with career and ambition. If the ruler of an empty Fourth House is in the Ninth House, home and family matters may become connected with travel, learning or wider experiences.

The house ruler allows an empty house to connect with the rest of the chart.

This is why counting planets in houses is not enough when reading a birth chart. A house containing several planets will naturally attract attention, but an empty house can still become important because its ruling planet occupies a prominent position or makes strong aspects to other planets.

The difference is mainly in how the information is found. When a planet occupies a house, the nature of that planet becomes part of the interpretation immediately. Mars in the Sixth House, for example, brings its energy, confidence and self assertion directly into work and everyday responsibilities. With an empty Sixth House, attention moves instead towards the sign on the cusp and its ruling planet.

Empty does not mean inactive.

The subjects represented by an empty house can also become particularly noticeable at different times in life. Planetary transits continue moving through every part of the Zodiac and can therefore pass through houses that contain no natal planets. A house that appears quiet in the birth chart can become much more active when planets move through it or make important aspects to its ruler.

A transit through an empty Seventh House, for example, can still coincide with a period when relationships become more important. The absence of a natal planet does not prevent transiting planets from moving through that part of the chart.

The same principle applies throughout the twelve houses.

An empty First House does not mean someone lacks a personality or sense of self. An empty Second House does not mean they will have no money. An empty Third House does not mean they cannot communicate or learn. An empty Fourth House does not remove home and family from their life.

An empty Fifth House does not remove creativity, pleasure, romance or children. An empty Sixth House does not remove work, health or daily responsibilities. The subjects of these houses remain part of everyone's life regardless of whether a natal planet happens to occupy them.

This becomes especially important with the houses people sometimes worry about when first looking at their chart. An empty house should never be interpreted as a prediction that something will not happen. The chart needs to be read as a complete system rather than as twelve separate boxes that are either occupied or empty.

There is also a difference between an empty house and a house containing several planets. When three or more planets gather closely together, they can form a stellium. This creates a concentration of planetary influences and can make that part of the chart particularly important. It does not follow that the empty houses around it become unimportant.

The distribution of planets simply tells us where some of the strongest concentrations of natal planetary influence are found.

The ruler of an empty house can itself be a powerful planet in the birth chart. It may be close to the Ascendant or Midheaven, occupy an important house or make several strong aspects. In this situation, the subjects of the supposedly empty house can become closely connected with one of the most noticeable planets in the chart.

This is another reason the complete birth chart matters. Signs, planets, houses and aspects work together. Looking only for planets inside a particular house removes much of the information needed to understand it.

When interpreting an empty house, begin with what the house represents. Then identify the Zodiac sign on its cusp and find the planet that rules that sign. Look at where that ruling planet is positioned and the aspects it makes. Finally, consider any transits that may currently be activating the house or its ruler.

In simple terms, empty houses matter just as much as the other houses in astrology. They still represent important areas of life. The difference is that their meaning is interpreted primarily through the Zodiac sign on the house cusp, its ruling planet and the connections that planet makes throughout the rest of the birth chart.
